Obituary for Mary Jane "Jean" Hernandez

Mary Jane “Jean” Hernandez, 81, of Toledo and formerly of Woodville, OH, went peacefully to be with her Lord and Savior on Monday, January 28, 2019 at Ohio Living Swan Creek, surrounded by her loving family. She was always a very strong woman with plenty of fight, but after twenty years of battling Parkinson’s and two bouts of breast cancer, she lost the will to battle through her hardships any longer. She was born on February 28, 1937 in Oak Harbor, OH to Arthur and Dolores (Darr) Felder, and that is when the fun started. One of four children growing up in Oak Harbor, she learned early that life was not always easy, but you could always make it better by adding a dash of humor to it. On June 10, 1954 she married her high school sweetheart and the love of her life Salvador “Satch” Hernandez in Oak Harbor. Jean and Satch raised 6 children and celebrated nearly 37 years of marriage before Satch passed in May of 1991. “Chickie” was the nickname given to her by Satch, and everyone referred to her that way. Chickie stayed home to raise her children until they were all in school. She then worked for Kroger as a Florist for 20 + years, until her retirement. Chickie’s house always had an open door, with kids of all ages going through it. It was a great place to grow up, with everyone always feeling welcome. As if all of her normal activities were not enough, she was known for her love of cooking, especially huge taco feeds for the sports teams of her children. Her other loves included flowers, of course, and being a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Parish in Genoa, as she was a woman of great faith. However, it was her family that always brought her the greatest joy.

Chickie is survived by her children: Tony (Holly) Hernandez of Pemberville, Cathy Hollister of Woodville, Steve (Melinda) Hernandez of Woodville, Rob (Amy Jo) Hernandez of Powell, Joan (Craig) Fankhauser of Holland and Tim Hernandez of Bowling Green, 13 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, sister: Gerry Behm of Oak Harbor and brother: Len (Mary) Felder of IL. In addition to her husband Satch, she was preceded in death by her parents and brother: Ken Felder.
