Obituary for Mike McAlear

Mike McAlear, a businessman, entrepreneur, community leader, philanthropist, husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, uncle and friend to many passed away on May 15th, 2017 in Perrysburg at age 56.

He was diagnosed with terminal cancer on December 31st, 2015 and battled it hard for 1 1/2 years. He passed away surrounded by loved ones at his side.

Mike has lived a long and fruitful life more than many. He let his light shine far and wide and followed his passions of business, church, community, law enforcement, music, technology innovation, and family. He was motivated by constantly learning new things, finding new challenges and innovating in that space. He overcame many obstacles in his life and had an insatiable desire to build and grow his business. He had a drive like no other and has pursued it vigorously in his lifetime. He built an amazing culture and team around him at work and in the community. Wherever Mike applied his drive, whether it be in business, family, or his passions he thoroughly loved being a positive change agent to whatever task laid before him. He was inclusive and had a diverse range of friends. He didn’t care about money, status, or where you came from only about your heart and your story.

Mike was born in 1960 in Montreal Canada and adopted by his loving parents Patrick and Marilyn McAlear. He went to Cardinal Stritch Catholic High School in 1975 and two years later met his beautiful future wife, Goria. In 1978 he graduated from Cardinal Stritch with honors, started school at the University of Toledo, and started working at Service Spring Corporation. In 1982 he graduated from the University of Toledo, in 1985 he married his wife of 32 years Gloria Rizor (yes, that’s 32 years of marriage!) and in 1987 Mike and Gloria started their family with the birth of the first of their four children. In 1990 he graduated from the University of Toledo with bachelors of Information Technology and masters in Finance. In 1998 Mike was in the Twenty under 40 by the Toledo Business Journal and in 2003 he was awarded the Entrepreneur of The Year award by Ernst & Young. Mike joined the American Red Cross in 2005 and served on the board until 2011along with serving on the board at Bay Park Hospital from 2010 to 2014. His passion for law enforcement lead him to become an Auxiliary Deputy Sheriff with the Wood County Sheriff’s Office, Sandusky County Sheriff’s Office and in 2014 a Reserve Marine Deputy in Steuben County, Indiana. Mike served as a Trustee for Owens Community College in 2016 and in the same year was also chosen as the Humanitarian of the year for the International Doors Association. Mike enjoyed being his children’s soccer coach and band manager in addition being involved with other organizations including; YMCA of Greater Toledo, Lourdes College, East Toledo Family Center, All Saints Financial Board, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Toledo Zoo, International Justice Mission, Rossford Board of Education, and the CedarCreek Church Financial Advisory Board.

In addition to his wife Gloria, Mike is survived by his children; Kevin and his wife Sarah McAlear, Michelle McAlear, Matthew and his wife Jennifer McAlear, Brian McAlear, parents; Patrick and Marilyn Mcalear, brother; Dr. Thomas and his wife Tammy McAlear and biological brother; Robert and his wife Gabby Barta.

Friends will be received on Tuesday, May 23, 2017 from 6pm-8pm & Wednesday, May 24, 2017 from 2pm to 8pm at CedarCreek Church, 29129 Lime City Road, Perrysburg, OH where funeral services will be conducted on Thursday, May 25, 2017 at 11 AM. There will be an additional time of visitation from 10am until time of services. Officiating will be Pastor Lee Powell, Pastor Tom Martin, Pastor Calvin Sweeney and Pastor Ben Snyder. Interment will be in Ft. Meigs Union Cemetery, Perrysburg, OH. The family request that guest consider wearing casual Hawaiian attire in honor of Mike. Contributions may take the form of memorials to: Colon Cancer Coalition, CedarCreek Church and IDA Scholarship Fund.
