Pre-need Planning
What is pre-need planning?
We tell folks to think of it as a guide line for your family. It's jotting down your wishes ahead of time. It's creating arrangements in advance, with or without pre-paying. You can list specific items or you can list the type or category.

For example:

  • A lot of details vs. just the basic items
  • A specific casket type vs. A price range
  • Actual clothing vs. type of clothing
  • Songs and Hymns vs. type of music

Most people say what they don't want, and that's important, too. We have heard "I don’t want a tie on, I never wear a tie anymore." Or "I don’t want bright lipstick." Whatever your thoughts are, we can record them ahead of time for your family. Knowing eliminates doubt.

Many folks believe they need to pre-pay their funeral if they pre-plan their funeral, but this is not necessarily the case. Pre-planning is simply recording your wishes ahead of time, so that those in charge of your arrangements are aware of your wishes. While it is not necessary to pay for your arrangements in advance, there are definite financial advantages to doing so, such as avoiding rising funeral costs. Those who wish to Pre-pay their funeral expenses have many choices from 1 year to 10 year plans with monthly to annual payments. Some even choose to pre-pay their funerals with a credit card so there won't be any financial burden for their family.

To Pre-Pay or Not to Pre-pay
While at one time we would have suggested keeping your money in the bank rather that pre-paying your funeral expenses, that’s no longer the case. Times have certainly changed.

Today’s savings vehicles just don’t provide the kind of growth we saw in the past. It's during financially uncertain times like these when pre-funding your funeral expenses may be the smartest decision you can make.

Because funerals will most likely cost much more in the years to come, pre-paying makes sense as a way to protect your family from rising funeral costs. At Marsh Funeral Homes, it means you never pay more for the cost of the goods and services you select. Regardless of how high cost might rise, you and your family will never receive a bill from us - even if the death occurs 20 or more years from now. We're aware that most funeral homes don't offer such a full guarantee. They might cover the cost of their services, but refuse to guarantee those expenses, beyond their immediate control, such as flowers, clergy, and cemetery fees. We believe pre-planning should provide you with the comfort of knowing everything is taken care of. Our guarantee assures it is.

Because you can't foresee every expense you'll face, where prices will head or how long you'll live, it's a good idea to have adequate protection in place.

You probably didn’t wake up this morning and say, "Gee! I think I'll pre-plan my funeral today!"

Does your family know what you want?
You may think your loved ones know your wishes. While they may know the funeral home you wish to use and may even have a general idea of what you want, chances are they are unprepared to answer the more than 50 questions they'll be asked at the time of your death.

We hear over and over again how much families wish they had taken the time to write things down together. It's difficult for them to remember specifics at such an emotional time, especially when a lot of decisions must be made so quickly. That's why we recommend you have information recorded ahead of time.

It is so much easier and more comforting for the family to be able to review information that has already been provided than to try to recall names, dates, times and preferences on one of the most difficult days of their lives.
